Roopkund is situated in the Chamoli district of Garhwal. The roadhead for Roopkund is Lohajung, located 155 km from Almora, 217 km from Nainital, and 235 km from Kathgodam. Roopkund, at an altitude of 5029 m, lies in the lap of the Trishuli massif. This area is often called the "Mystery Lake" because human skeletons and horse remains dating back to the Paleolithic age were discovered here.
The lake is surrounded by rock-strewn glaciers and snow-clad peaks. The trek starts from Lohajung, easily accessible by motorable road from Almora. Roopkund can also be approached via Ghat, connected to Nanda Prayag on the Badrinath highway. The trek passes through lush green meadows, conifer forests, and gradually climbs the hillsides. The route follows the Pindar River and continues towards Hemkund via the Shail Samundras glacier. Highlights include Bedni Bugyal and Bagwawasa, with rare flowers like Brahmakamal near Bagwawasa.
The trek covers approximately 40 km from the roadhead and typically requires 8 days of trekking.
