November is the trekker's month. The crowds of October are gone, and a profound stillness settles over the Himalayas. The air turns from cool to sharp, and the days become shorter, but the skies remain brilliantly clear. This is the onset of the winter season, a time for those who seek solitude and the crisp, cold beauty of the mountains without the festive rush. November marks a great month for trekking in India.
The main advantage of November treks is this unmatched quiet. You can often have entire campsites and trails to yourself. The auburn colors of autumn have faded, and the landscape is a stark, stunning brown, often accented by the first light snowfalls on the peaks. High passes over 4,500 meters are now closing, so the focus shifts to stunning mid-altitude treks in the Indian Himalayas. It's a month for clear views, crackling bonfires, and a deeply personal connection with the mountains.
November is characterized by cold, dry, and stable weather. The days are short and sunny, but the nights are significantly colder than in October. In Uttarakhand & Himachal Pradesh, the weather remains stable and dry. You can expect cloudless blue skies almost every day. The air is cold and sharp, and the winter makes its presence felt. Daytime temperatures are pleasant in the sun (10°C to 15°C), but nights are cold, regularly dropping to 0°C or -5°C.
In Sikkim and the eastern Himalayas, the weather is similar to Uttarakhand and Himachal. The views of the Kanchenjunga range are spectacular. It gets very cold, very quickly. Daytime temperatures will be around 10°C, but nights can plummet to -10°C at higher altitudes. The season for high-altitude treks like Goecha La is now over. What enhances the overall experience of trekking in November is the gradually cooling temperatures and the calm rivers, streams, and air, which is noticeably fresh, making trekking enjoyable.
