Overview

The Gangotri to Nandanvan Trek is a unique blend of spirituality and adventure in the Garhwal Himalayas. Beyond being a pilgrimage, the trek treats you to vibrant alpine landscapes, snow-capped peaks under serene blue skies, streams flowing from moraines, and the wild, pristine ambiance of the Indian Himalayas.

This trek connects several Hindu pilgrimage sites and reveals the mythological source of the River Ganga at Gaumukh (4,125 meters), the snout of the Gangotri Glacier. Along the way, trekkers enjoy spectacular views of the Bhagirathi group of peaks, Jogin Peak, Shivling Peak, and other 6,000-meter giants. The journey passes through dense cedar and pine forests, gradually transitioning to challenging glaciated tracks. Trekkers may also spot herds of Bharal and come across colorful alpine flora and meadows.

High-altitude meadows like Tapovan (4,463 meters) and Nandanvan (4,340 meters) serve as resting points and are home to several Sadhus. These scenic spots attract trekkers from across the globe, offering an unforgettable Himalayan experience.

The trek starts from Gangotri (3,100 meters), a revered Hindu pilgrimage site with a shrine dedicated to Goddess Ganga. The route passes through Bhojwassa (3,800 meters), Chirbasa, and Gaumukh before ascending to Tapovan and then Nandanvan over glaciers and moraine fields. The return trek retraces the same path back to Gangotri and then to Rishikesh.

This trek is considered moderate to tough, recommended for travelers with prior high-altitude trekking experience. The ideal months for this journey are May - June and September - October.
