You are sure to carry back some of the most adventurous memories of your lifetime when you return to city life after completing the Dhumdhar (Damdar) Kandi Pass Trek. Set at an altitude of around 5,600 meters, Dhumdhar (Damdar) Kandi Pass is among the highest and most challenging mountain passes in the Indian Himalayas. Located in the Garhwal Himalayas, it connects the sacred pilgrimage routes of Gangotri and Yamunotri, unfolding a dramatic landscape of remote hamlets, vast alpine meadows, and dense forests of deodar, pine, and rhododendron.
The trek to Dhumdhar Kandi Pass crosses gushing mountain streams, treacherous moraines, and glaciated trails that demand extreme caution. Counted among the toughest treks in the Garhwal region, the route involves relentless ascents and descents through narrow ridges, rocky paths, and exposed cliff sections. En route, trekkers are rewarded with breathtaking views of the Gangotri Group of Peaks, including Bandarpoonch and Swargarohini, while the lush expanse of Ruinsara Valley unfolds magnificently during the Dhumdhar Kandi Pass Trekking tour.
The Dhumdhar Kandi Pass Trek begins from Jhala, approximately a 3 - 4 hour drive from Uttarkashi. From Jhala, the trail follows the left bank of Sian Gad, winding through dense forests to reach the shepherd camps. The trek then ascends towards Kyarkoti (3,750 m), followed by a strenuous climb to Guntu Nala and onwards to the base of Dhumdhar Kandi Pass via sweeping alpine meadows.
Crossing the Dhumdhar Kandi Pass is the most demanding section of the journey, involving steep climbs and a dramatic descent towards Kalanag Base. From here, the trail continues downhill past waterfalls to Ruinsara Tal, and later traverses Bali Pass via Thange, finally leading to Yamunotri and onward to Dehradun via Mussoorie.
Due to its high altitude and demanding terrain, the Dhumdhar Kandi Pass Trek requires excellent physical fitness and proper acclimatization. It is strongly recommended for trekkers with prior high - altitude trekking experience. The ideal time for undertaking this expedition is during the summer and early autumn months.
