The Dodital Trek is a short yet enchanting Himalayan journey that takes you through dense forests, sparkling streams, lush meadows, and breathtaking mountain scenery. The star attraction of this trek is the Dodital Lake, a crystal-clear freshwater lake surrounded by thick forests of rhododendron, fir, and oak.
Roughly hexagonal in shape, Dodital is home to the golden trout, locally known as Dodi, which gives the lake its name. As per ancient Puranic references, Dodital is considered a sacred lake, believed to be the birthplace of Lord Ganesha. The lake feeds around 80 rivulets that merge to form the Assi Ganga River, giving the surrounding area the name Assi Ganga Valley.
Another name for this lake is Dhundital, derived from Dhundi, a Sanskrit name for Lord Ganesha. Legend says that Lord Ganesha was born here while Goddess Parvati was bathing in the lake. When Lord Shiva returned and, not recognizing his son, beheaded him in anger, he later revived him with the head of an elephant—thus giving rise to the beloved form of Ganapati we know today. A temple dedicated to Lord Ganesha still stands near the lake, and its scriptures narrate this ancient tale.
