The Hampta Pass Trek is one of the best crossover treks in Himachal Pradesh. It offers a spectacular journey from the lush Kullu Valley to the starkly beautiful Spiti region, blending verdant meadows, alpine forests, and dramatic high-altitude landscapes. Unlike most high-altitude pass treks, the Hampta Pass trail packs an extraordinary variety of landscapes into just 25 km, making its dramatic shift in scenery the standout feature of this popular trek in Himachal Pradesh.
This trekking tour in Himachal starts from the heritage village of Jagatsukh near Manali; the trail ascends through cedar and oak forests to the flower-filled meadows of Sarotu Thach. Trekkers then pass the ski slopes of Sethan and the serene campsites of Jogi Dugh and Chikka, where streams and waterfalls enrich the scenery. As the route climbs higher, Jwara and Balu ka Gera present sweeping views of the Pir Panjal range and glimpses of the Hampta Pass itself.
The crossing of Hampta Pass (4,270 m) is the trek's highlight, rewarding one with stunning panoramas of towering peaks like Deo Tibba (6,001 m) and Indrasan (6,221 m) before a steep descent to the tranquil plains of Shea Goru. The journey concludes at Chhatru along the Chandra River. The Hampta Pass Trek offers a rich mix of forest trails, wildflower valleys, glacier crossings, and high-mountain vistas, perfect for trekkers seeking both variety and breathtaking Himalayan beauty.
After breakfast, drive 9 km to Jagatsukh, once the capital of Kullu and home to an 8th-century Shikhara-style Shiva temple. Continue to Banara Village and begin a gentle ascent through cedar and oak forests, passing the hilltop Nag Temple with sweeping views of the upper Kullu Valley. Trek through flower-lined trails to the lush meadows of Tilgan Thach and on to the first campsite at Satoru Thach. Overnight in tents.
Climb gradually to the open slopes of Hamta, renowned winter heli-ski terrain, with vistas of the Pir Panjal and Brigu Lake peaks. Pass the shepherd meadows of Jogi Dugh and continue through herb-rich forests to Jobri. Follow the Hamta stream to the picturesque Chikka campsite near waterfalls.
Cross bridges and a lively stream before reaching Jwara, then ascend gently to the serene Balu ka Gera meadow, your first glimpse of Hampta Pass. Keep watch for Himalayan wildlife, including bears in early or late season.
Start early for the long, rewarding climb over boulder fields and flower-strewn slopes to Hampta Pass, offering stunning views of Deo Tibba and Indrasan. Descend steeply to the wide plains of Shea Goru for camp.
Cross a stream and follow the right bank until it meets the Chandra River, then traverse a wooden bridge to reach Chhatru. Overnight camp beside the river.
This day marks the end of your trekking tour in Himachal. Today, we drive along the Chandra River through the Atal Tunnel to return to Manali.
