Hidden deep in the Pir Panjal ranges, the Pangi Valley is a remote Himalayan gem that few have explored. Known as the land of the Pangwalas, it is home to cheerful communities, rich traditions, and stunning landscapes, making it one of the most interesting trekking destinations in Himachal Pradesh. The valley stretches along the Chenab River and its tributaries, linking routes to charming Bhatori settlements such as Chask, Tuwan, Hudan, and Sural.
The journey starts from Manali, crossing Rohtang La, and gradually entering this untouched world where green meadows transition into icy glaciers and high passes. The trail winds through alpine valleys, sparkling streams, and rugged cliffs, offering a rare taste of raw Himalayan adventure. As trekkers pass through villages, locals sing and dance as part of their cultural life. This journey offers a glimpse into centuries-old Himalayan heritage.
As you move from Chask toward Tuwan, the last settlement in the valley, the real trekking begins. Glacial crossings lead to Pimu La (Dagai Jot), showcasing views of unscaled granite peaks and hidden glaciers. Descending into the vast Gumbah and Tharang Thanpattan pastures, the trek concludes at Khanjar, with a visit to the sacred Triloknath Temple adding a spiritual touch.
This lesser-known trek in North India offers a unique experience of cultural encounters, pristine valleys, and untouched Himalayan beauty. This trek in Himachal Pradesh is about immersing yourself in the raw beauty of the Himalayas, where every step tells a story of wilderness, tradition, and adventure.
Your journey begins in Manali's vibrant town. After an early start, we drive to the iconic Rohtang La Pass. As we descend from the pass, the route hugs the Chandra River. This path offers stunning views of rugged mountains and charming villages in Lahaul. At Tandi, we can see the spectacular meeting of the Bhaga and Chandra rivers, which form the mighty Chenab. From here, the road takes us into the fertile Pattan Valley, filled with barley fields and traditional villages. We continue through Udaipur, a town known for its ancient temples and rich cultural heritage. Finally, we arrive at the remote settlement of Saichu for an overnight stay.
The day starts with a hike to the traditional village of Chask Bhatori, the highest settlement in the Pangi Valley region. This remote village is home to the warm and welcoming Bhatori community. Here, centuries-old traditions and unique lifestyles continue in harmony with nature. As you explore, you'll have the chance to interact with locals, see their traditional homes, and learn about their pastoral way of life. These cultural experiences make this journey one of the most rewarding trekking tours in Himachal Pradesh. After enjoying this beautiful mountain village, we head back to Saichu. From there, a short drive leads us to a charming village in the valley, Tuwan for an overnight stay.
After breakfast, the trek begins from Tuwan, a settlement located at the meeting point of the Jambu Nallah and Saichu Nallah. The trail winds gently through alpine meadows filled with seasonal wildflowers and grazing cattle. This creates a peaceful atmosphere against the backdrop of towering peaks. As we cross small rivers and streams, the path gradually climbs in elevation. The landscapes change as forests give way to open highlands. By the afternoon, we reach our campsite near the junction with Sirakund Nallah. The large meadow here features clear water streams and expansive mountain views, providing a peaceful place to spend the night under a starlit sky.
Leaving Tuve Longpo, the trail gradually rises along the valley floor. It crosses areas of rocky moraine formed by centuries of glacial movement. The raw and rugged beauty of the land shows the untouched charm of the Himalayas. Silence is broken only by flowing streams and the wind against the cliffs. As we continue, we arrive where Sappar Nallah joins the valley. This scenic point features glacial waters merging into the landscape. The campsite here is impressive, surrounded by towering peaks and offering a great chance to experience the remoteness of this wild Himalayan area. We will camp overnight at Zarong Rong.
Today marks an essential journey stage as we head toward the base camp. The trek steadily climbs through high-altitude terrain, with stunning views at every turn. The trail reveals glimpses of glaciers, vast open meadows, and distant snow-capped ridges that show why this area is one of the best treks in Himachal Pradesh. When we arrive at base camp, we settle in early. This helps us save energy for next day's challenging yet rewarding climb.
This is one of the trek's most demanding, challenging, and rewarding days. The route has no fixed trail, so we must navigate steep climbs toward Pimu La, also called Dagal Jot by local shepherds. The ascent is challenging, but reaching the high pass feels like a victory. It reveals stunning views of snowfields and vast Himalayan ridgelines. From the top, we carefully descend onto the Pimu glacier on the Miyar side. We cross large boulders and scree slopes shaped by centuries of ice movement. As we near the valley, we see the famous granite towers of the Miyar, including the legendary Castle Peak, a spot admired by rock climbers worldwide. Camping at Kesar Unchob.
Leaving Kesar Unchob, or the Miyar base area, we start with a gentle descent to the valley floor. The trail follows the Miyar Nallah, a clear stream that takes us deeper into the valley. Soon, we arrive at the foot of the Kang La glacier and cross it near Phalpu, surrounded by stunning landscapes of ice and rock. The route then goes beneath the towering Castle Peak, which offers spectacular views of its steep granite walls. We occasionally cross side streams like Takdung, adding to the day's excitement. The trek continues through alpine meadows filled with wildflowers, eventually leading us to the beautiful campsite at Gumbah.
From Gumbah, the trail continues through the wide valley of Miyar, where endless alpine pastures spread like a natural carpet. This is the grazing ground for yaks and dzos, tended by local herders who set up seasonal camps in the summer months. The path crosses a ford near Gumbah and then goes over a stony moraine before leading into the vast grasslands of Thanpattan.
The scenery here is breathtaking. The Tharang group of peaks dominates the skyline, while to the east lies a remote trail that eventually leads to Zanskar via the Tarasalamu La. Thanpattan offers one of the most beautiful campsites of the journey, a meadow filled with wildflowers under the shadow of high snow-covered peaks. An optional acclimatization walk to the base of Tharang Peak provides a close-up view of this majestic mountain.
Today's journey takes you from wilderness to civilization. The trail gradually descends through rolling pastures and leads to the charming village of Khanjar. Here, cultivated barley fields signal the start of human settlements after days of high-altitude trekking. As you cross a wooden bridge, the trail joins a motorable road that winds down the valley.
The route goes through Shukto before reaching Urgos, a picturesque village surrounded by apple orchards and traditional wooden homes. A short walk from the village leads you to a centuries-old gompa, where fluttering prayer flags and ancient murals showcase the deep-rooted Buddhist culture of the area. Overnight stay at Urgos.
The final day of your journey mixes adventure with cultural discovery. From Urgos, the drive follows the Miyar Nallah downstream, passing through lush valleys and remote villages before arriving in Udaipur, a town rich in history and spirituality. Here, you will visit the sacred Triloknath Temple, an important site for Hindus and Buddhists, dedicated to Lord Shiva as 'Triloknath' or the “Lord of Three Worlds.”
As you continue the drive, the route follows the Chandra-Bhaga River, its turquoise waters carving through stunning gorges and rugged mountains. At Tandi, see the confluence of the Chandra and Bhaga rivers, which form the mighty Chenab, one of the great rivers in the Western Himalayas. The climb towards Rohtang La reveals a striking contrast as barren Lahaul valleys give way to the lush greenery of Kullu. By evening, you reach Manali, marking the end of the trek.
