For those tired of the chaos of city life yet not ready for the extreme challenges of high-altitude trekking, the Dzongri Trek offers the perfect escape. This beautiful journey takes you through moss-laden forests of oak, chestnut, maple, pine, and rhododendron — a paradise of Himalayan biodiversity. In less than a week, you'll find yourself immersed in an eco-friendly haven of natural beauty.
Culminating in lush alpine meadows with unparalleled mountain views, the trail is dotted with a wide variety of flowering and medicinal plants. It is also home to several endangered species of animals, birds, and insects found at different altitudes — making it a naturalist's paradise.
The trek not only offers stunning landscapes but also introduces you to the ethnic culture and traditions of local communities. Among the easy to moderate treks in Sikkim, Dzongri stands out for its unique blend of scenic beauty, wilderness, and cultural richness. The major highlight of the journey is the majestic view of Mt. Kanchenjunga and the golden sunrise over its snow-clad peaks — a sight that makes every step worthwhile.
The Dzongri Trek begins from Yuksom, the former capital of Sikkim, located at an altitude of 1,780 meters. The trail gradually ascends to Tsokha via Bakhim (2,700 meters). The route winds through tropical forests, sparkling streams, and vibrant rhododendron groves.
From Tsokha, the trek continues towards Dzongri via Phedang, passing through enchanting valleys and lively gorges. On this route, trekkers can spot peaks such as Mt. Pandim, Mt. Thenchinkhang, and Mt. Jhopuno. From Dzongri Top, the panoramic view expands to include Mt. Kanchenjunga, Mt. Kabru, Mt. Koktang, Mt. Thenchinkhang, Mt. Narsing, and others — an unforgettable Himalayan spectacle.
The return journey follows the same route via Tsokha to Yuksom and concludes at Gangtok.

The trek begins from Yuksom's local market, moving north along the main trail. After crossing the right bank of the Ratong Chu River, the path includes four bridges and a steep ascent to Bakhim, a small settlement. Continue another 3 km through dense rhododendron and magnolia forests to reach Tsokha, your campsite for the night.
The trek ascends through thick rhododendron forests to Phedang (3,650 m), a scenic resting spot reached after about three hours of steep climbing. From here, continue the ascent towards Dzongri, where you'll have dinner and camp overnight.
