Overview

The Phoktey Dara is a beautiful easy-to-moderate Himalayan trek that takes you deep into the untouched forests and ridgelines of West Sikkim. Your adventure begins at the quiet village of Uttarey, where you settle into a homestay and ease into mountain life. Over the next few days, the trail gently climbs through rhododendron-filled forests, bamboo groves, and mossy oak woods as you move from Uttarey to Barsey and onwards to Joributey, each stop offering peaceful campsites and sweeping views of the Singalila Ridge.

The trek gradually transitions from dense forest to high alpine terrain as you approach Kalijhar, your base for the region's most iconic experience: the sunrise climb to Phoktey Dara. From its 3,700 m ridge, you witness one of the rarest Himalayan panoramas: Everest, Kanchenjunga, Lhotse, Makalu, and surrounding peaks glowing together at dawn. After taking in this spectacular moment, the trail continues toward the Singalila Pass before looping back through forested slopes to Uttarey, bringing you full circle through some of Sikkim’s most pristine landscapes.

This trek in Sikkim is for trekkers seeking a scenic but manageable Himalayan route; this trek blends cultural encounters, quiet wilderness, and big-mountain views without the strain of steep altitude. Comfortable homestays, serene woodland trails, rich biodiversity, peaceful paths, and world-class sunrise viewpoints make it a rewarding choice for anyone looking to experience an offbeat side of Sikkim.
