The Trek to Markha Valley in Ladakh is one of the most spectacular alpine adventures in the Indian Himalayas, combining dramatic landscapes, vibrant culture, and high-altitude thrills. Known as one of the best treks in Ladakh, this journey takes you through a remote yet mesmerizing region filled with towering peaks, deep gorges, ancient monasteries, and traditional villages.
As part of the Markha Valley Trekking tour, trekkers navigate rugged terrain, cross glacial streams, and traverse two high mountain passes - Ganda La (4,800 m) and Kongmaru La (5,150 m) - offering panoramic views of the majestic Kang Yatse peak and the vast Markha Valley below. Along the route, the trail passes through charming Ladakhi hamlets where you can witness the unique Indo-Tibetan culture and hospitality.
The trek also runs through Hemis National Park, home to rare wildlife such as the Himalayan blue sheep, marmots, and occasionally, the elusive snow leopard. Take the morning flight to Leh, a scenic journey offering aerial views of the mighty Himalayas. Upon arrival, transfer to the guest house and rest for the day to acclimatize to the high altitude. Overnight stay in Leh.
Embark on a sightseeing tour of some of Ladakh's most famous monasteries. Visit Shey Palace, once the summer residence of Ladakh's kings, home to a magnificent 12-meter-high Buddha statue. Continue to Thiksey Monastery, one of the region's most beautiful gompas belonging to the Gelugpa order. Later, explore Hemis Monastery, the largest and richest monastery in Ladakh, set in a serene valley surrounded by mountains. Return to Leh for an overnight stay.
After breakfast, drive to Spituk, home to the 500-year-old Spituk Gompa. Begin your Markha Valley Trekking tour by crossing a bridge over the Indus River and trekking southwest through a scenic gorge. Camp near the village of Zinchen. Overnight in tents.
Gradually ascend through the valley towards Rumbak, offering panoramic views of the Stok Mountains. Continue along the Rumbak Nala to reach Yurutse, a small village surrounded by barley and potato fields. Overnight stay in tents.
A moderate climb leads to Ganda La Pass (4,900 m), from where you can enjoy magnificent views of the Zanskar and distant Himalayan ranges. Descend through Shingo village and continue along a narrow gorge to Skiu, where two rivers merge - from Markha Valley and Shingo. Overnight in tents.
Today's trek is a pleasant hike up the picturesque Markha Valley, with several stream crossings and scenic views of traditional villages. Reach Markha village, known for its ancient fort ruins and a small monastery. Overnight in tents.
The landscape changes as you leave behind the lush lower Markha Valley. The trail involves several river crossings with no bridges, passing through Hankar, the highest village in the valley. Overnight in tents at Thochuntse.
Trek along a gently rising path across grassy ridges dotted with mani walls and chortens. The views become increasingly spectacular as you approach Nimaling, one of the most beautiful high-altitude meadows in Ladakh, dominated by Kang Yatse Peak. Overnight in tents.
Today's highlight is crossing Kongmaru La, the highest point of the trek, offering breathtaking views of the Karakoram and Zanskar ranges — and on clear days, even K2 in the distance. Descend into the Martselang Valley and follow the stream to Sumdo. Overnight in tents.
Make an easy descent along the Martselang stream to its confluence with the Indus Valley at Martselang village. Board your waiting vehicles and drive to Hemis Monastery, then continue to Leh via Shey and Thiksey. Overnight stay in Leh.
Transfer to the airport for your return flight to Delhi, enjoying one last spectacular aerial view of the Himalayas.
