The Sunderdhunga Trek is one of Uttarakhand's best-kept secrets, tucked away in the remote Kumaon Himalayas beside the more famous Pindari and Kafni glaciers. Trekkers often describe Sunderdhunga as even more captivating than its popular neighbors, thanks to pristine alpine landscapes and a rich cultural heritage. The trail winds through dense oak and rhododendron forests, sparkling streams, and high-altitude meadows framed by towering peaks, offering a perfect blend of rugged adventure and quiet Himalayan beauty. Ideal for experienced trekkers, this lesser-known trek in Uttarakhand promises both a challenging journey and an intimate encounter with the untamed, surreal side of Kumaon.
The Sunderdhunga Trek begins at Jaikuni / Dau, where traditional Kumaoni hospitality and cuisine set the tone for the days ahead. From here, the trail climbs steadily through pine, oak, and rhododendron forests to the charming village of Jaitoli (2,438 m), a path adorned with mountain streams and the chance to spot Himalayan monal or musk deer.
In this scenic trekking expedition in Kumaon, the landscape grows ever more dramatic as we approach Kathaliya, crossing lush meadows and passing remote shepherd huts at Dhungia Dhaung. Kathaliya serves as the base for exploring the high Himalayas. A thrilling excursion to Maiktoli Base Camp unveils sweeping views of the Maiktoli Glacier and towering peaks such as Mrigthuni (6855 m) and Panwali Dwar (6663 m). The adventurous trek in Kumaon continues with a demanding ascent to Baluni Top, where the thin air tests endurance but rewards trekkers with breathtaking 360-degree Himalayan panoramas. From this lofty vantage, you can venture to the sacred glacial lakes of Devi Kund and Nag Kund, sites steeped in local legends and spiritual reverence.
The return follows the same trails, offering another chance to savor forested paths, alpine meadows, and distant snow-clad peaks. By the time you descend to Jaitoli and drive back to Kathgodam, the Sunderdhunga Valley Trek will have left you with far more than photographs—an experience etched in memory long after the journey ends.
