Off Beaten Treks
Though one of the smaller states in India that is locked in between the Greater Himalaya in the north, Nepal in the west, North Bengal in the south and Bhutan in the West, Sikkim boast of a vast ecosphere that is bedded with several species of alpine trees, medicinal plants and flowering orchards. The off beaten trekking tracks in the Sikkim Himalayan region traverses through various tribal villages that exhibits the ethnicity and harmony within three different cliques, Lepchas, Nepalis and Bhutias. The trek to Maenam from Ravangla, which is merely a 9 kilometers trek, leads off at an altitude of 3,048 meters and one can capture the panoramic view of the Kanchenjunga and its family to the north and the sprawling verdure of North Bengal foothills.
Built in the late 18th century, the Tholung Monastery, which houses several ancient manuscripts, sacred relics, scriptures and artifacts, is the oldest and most important monastery in Dzongu. It is perched at an altitude of about 2,500 meters and the trek to Tholung commences from Lingza village. The journey cuts through the cultivable lands of the region that is crisscrossed by several small streams. The off beaten trek in Sikkim continues along the River Rimpi and one can even explore the surrounding caves, which are believed to have divine value.
The Damthang - Tendong Trek that starts from Namchi is another off beaten treks in Sikkim. The journey will take you back in time rewinding the history of the Lepcha tribe. Secluded in the picturesque valley under the shadow of the sacred Tendong Hill, the region dilates the erstwhile lifestyle of the Buddhist Lamas.
